That advice belongs to an older era of surgery. Today, there is no benefit in waiting until vision is severely lost — and several reasons not to.
Why very mature cataracts are harder
- A dense, rock-hard lens takes more energy to remove and can stress the eye
- The risk of certain complications rises
- Rarely, an over-mature cataract can itself cause inflammation or raise eye pressure
The right time
The best time is when the cataract interferes with reading, driving, work or daily life — on your timeline and your surgeon’s advice, not when it is “ripe”. Surgery on a less-dense cataract is generally smoother and safer.
