Life After LASIK: Recovery and Results

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

For most people, the days and weeks after LASIK are smoother than expected. Here is a realistic picture of recovery — what is normal, what to do, and how durable the results are.

The first 24–48 hours

Vision is often hazy and the eyes may water or feel gritty for a few hours. Most people rest, sleep, and notice markedly clearer vision the next morning. Protective shields and drops help the flap settle.

The first weeks

Vision continues to sharpen and stabilise. Temporary dryness or night-time glare is common and usually improves over weeks to months. Lubricating drops and follow-up keep recovery on track.

How lasting are the results?

For a stable prescription, LASIK results are generally long-lasting. Natural age-related changes — presbyopia (reading vision after 40) and, later, cataract — can still occur, as they would in any eye.

Frequently asked questions

When can I drive or return to work after LASIK?

Many people return within a day or two once vision stabilises; your surgeon will confirm based on your recovery.

Will I still need reading glasses after LASIK?

LASIK corrects distance vision; reading glasses may still be needed later in life as natural focusing ability changes with age.
