LASIK Surgery: What Happens on the Day

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

For many people the idea of laser eye surgery is more daunting than the reality. LASIK is quick, performed awake under numbing drops, and most people are surprised by how straightforward the day is.

Before the procedure

Your eyes are re-checked and numbing drops are given. You will be awake and comfortable; the actual laser treatment takes only seconds per eye.

During LASIK

A thin protective flap is created, the laser gently reshapes the cornea to correct your prescription, and the flap is smoothed back into place — no stitches needed. You may feel mild pressure but not pain.

The first hours

Vision is often hazy and the eyes may water or feel gritty for a few hours. Most people rest, then notice clearer vision the next morning. Protective shields and drops help the flap settle.

Why screening comes first

Careful corneal mapping before LASIK is essential to confirm your cornea is suitable and to rule out conditions such as keratoconus.

Frequently asked questions

Is LASIK painful?

It is done under numbing drops and is generally painless; most feel only pressure. Mild irritation afterwards settles quickly.

When can I return to work after LASIK?

Many people return within a day or two, once vision stabilises — your surgeon will advise based on your job and recovery.
