Cataract Surgery: When Is the Right Time?
One of the most common questions we hear is, “When should I have my cataract removed?” The honest answer is that there is no single magic moment – and importantly, you do not need to wait until a cataract is “ripe.” Modern cataract surgery is done when the cataract starts to affect your daily life, on a timeline that suits you and your surgeon.
Signs it may be time
- Blurred or dull vision that new glasses no longer fix
- Glare or halos that make night driving difficult
- Colours looking faded, or needing more light to read
- Everyday tasks – reading, cooking, recognising faces – becoming harder
Why “waiting until it is ripe” is outdated
That advice comes from an older era of surgery. Today, small-incision phacoemulsification is gentler and recovers faster when the cataract is operated at the right stage rather than left to harden. Waiting too long can actually make surgery more complex.
It is a quality-of-life decision
If your vision is comfortable and not limiting you, it is perfectly reasonable to wait and monitor. If it is interfering with the things you enjoy, that is usually the signal. We will examine your eyes, measure them precisely for the right intraocular lens, and help you decide – never rushing you into surgery you do not need.
Common questions
Is it dangerous to delay cataract surgery?
For most people a cataract can be safely monitored. Very advanced cataracts can make surgery harder and occasionally raise eye pressure, so we keep an eye on it and advise when the balance tips toward surgery.
Will I need glasses after surgery?
It depends on the lens chosen and your eyes. Some patients reduce their dependence on glasses; others still use them for some tasks. We discuss this honestly beforehand.
