Eye Safety at Work and Home: Preventing Injuries

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

The great majority of eye injuries are preventable with a moment’s precaution. From DIY and gardening to workshops and sport, a little protection saves a great deal of trouble.

Common risks

  • Flying particles from grinding, hammering, drilling or mowing
  • Chemical splashes from cleaning products and garden chemicals
  • Sports impacts (balls, rackets, shuttlecocks)
  • Sharp objects and stray branches in the garden

Simple protection

Wear proper safety glasses or goggles for any task that can throw particles or splash chemicals, and appropriate eye protection for high-risk sports. Read labels on chemicals and keep them away from the face.

If injury strikes

  • Chemical splash: rinse the eye immediately with clean water for 15–20 minutes, then seek urgent care
  • Impact or cut: protect (don’t press) the eye and get help; don’t remove anything embedded

Frequently asked questions

Do ordinary glasses protect my eyes during DIY?

Not reliably — everyday glasses aren’t impact-rated. Use proper safety eyewear for grinding, hammering or chemicals.

What’s the most urgent eye injury?

A chemical splash — rinse immediately and copiously before doing anything else, then seek care.
