Red Eye: Common Causes and When It’s Serious
A red eye is one of the most common eye complaints, and most causes are minor and settle on their own. The skill is recognising the few situations where redness signals something that needs prompt attention.
Common, usually minor causes
- Conjunctivitis (viral, bacterial or allergic) — gritty, watery or sticky eyes
- Dry eye and irritation
- A subconjunctival haemorrhage — a dramatic-looking but harmless red patch from a tiny burst vessel
When red eye is serious
Seek a same-day check if redness comes with:
- Pain (more than mild irritation)
- Reduced or blurred vision
- Marked light sensitivity
- A history of contact-lens wear or injury
These can indicate infection, inflammation inside the eye, or acute glaucoma.
Frequently asked questions
Is a bright red patch on the white of my eye dangerous?
A subconjunctival haemorrhage usually looks alarming but is harmless and clears in a couple of weeks. If it’s painful or recurrent, get it checked.
When should I worry about a red eye?
When there’s pain, reduced vision or strong light sensitivity — or if you wear contact lenses. Then seek same-day care.
