Contact Lens Hygiene: Preventing Eye Infections
Contact lenses are safe and convenient for millions of people — but they sit directly on the eye, so good hygiene is essential. Most serious lens-related problems come from a handful of avoidable habits.
The golden rules
- Wash and dry your hands before touching lenses
- Never sleep in lenses unless they are specifically designed for it and you’ve been advised it’s safe
- Never use water on lenses, and don’t swim or shower in them
- Use fresh solution every time — never “top up” old solution
- Replace lenses and the case on schedule
Why it matters
Poor hygiene is the leading cause of microbial keratitis — a corneal infection that can threaten sight. Water exposure in particular risks a serious infection (Acanthamoeba).
Warning signs
If a lens-wearing eye becomes painful, red, light-sensitive or blurred, remove the lens and seek a same-day check — keep the lens and case for testing.

Can I shower or swim with contact lenses in?
It’s best not to — water can carry organisms that cause severe infection. Remove lenses first.
Is it safe to sleep in contact lenses?
Only with lenses specifically approved for overnight wear and on professional advice; otherwise it raises infection risk significantly.
