Comprehensive Eye Check-Up: What’s Included

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

A comprehensive eye examination is far more than reading letters on a chart. It is a health check for your eyes that can detect silent, sight-threatening conditions long before you notice symptoms.

What a full check-up includes

  • Vision and refraction — your prescription for glasses or lenses
  • Eye pressure — screening for glaucoma
  • Front-of-eye exam — cornea, lens (cataract) and surface health
  • Dilated retina exam — the macula, optic nerve and blood vessels

Why it catches problems early

Glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and early cataract often have no symptoms at first. A thorough examination finds them at a stage when treatment is simplest and most effective.

Who should have one — and how often

Adults benefit from regular check-ups, more often with age, diabetes, high prescriptions or a family history of eye disease. Your specialist will recommend the right interval.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I have a full eye check-up?

For many adults, every one to two years; more often with diabetes, glaucoma risk or a family history. Don’t wait for symptoms.

Will my eyes be dilated?

Often yes — dilation lets the retina be examined fully. Vision may be blurry for a few hours, so bring sunglasses.
