Children’s Eye Check: When and Why
Children rarely complain about their vision — they assume the way they see is normal. That is exactly why routine eye checks matter: some conditions, if missed in early childhood, can affect vision for life.
Why early checks matter
The visual system develops in the first years of life. Problems such as a “lazy eye” (amblyopia), squint or a strong refractive error are most treatable when caught early — and may become permanent if found too late.
Signs worth checking
- An eye that turns in or out (squint)
- Sitting close to screens, holding books very near, or frequent head tilting
- Squinting, eye-rubbing or complaints of headaches
- A family history of eye problems
When to check
An assessment in the preschool years, before starting school, and whenever a concern arises is sensible — even if your child seems to see well.
Frequently asked questions
My child seems to see fine — do they still need an eye test?
Yes. Many childhood eye problems have no obvious signs, and early detection is what makes them treatable.
At what age should a child first have their eyes checked?
A check in the preschool years is wise, with earlier assessment if there is any concern or family history.
