Glaucoma: The Silent Thief of Sight

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

Glaucoma is called the “silent thief of sight” for good reason: the most common form has no early symptoms, yet it slowly damages the optic nerve and steals side vision before you notice. The damage cannot be reversed — but it can usually be controlled when caught in time.

Why it goes unnoticed

Vision loss in glaucoma starts at the edges and creeps inward so gradually that the brain fills in the gaps. By the time central vision is affected, significant damage may already be done.

Who is at higher risk

  • Age over 40, with risk rising in later decades
  • A family history of glaucoma
  • Raised eye pressure, high short-sightedness or diabetes
  • Previous eye injury or long-term steroid use

The power of early detection

A simple check of eye pressure, the optic nerve and the field of vision can detect glaucoma early — when drops, laser or surgery can protect the sight you have. This is why regular eye examinations matter, even when your vision feels fine.

Frequently asked questions

Can glaucoma be cured?

It cannot be cured, but it can usually be controlled. Treatment aims to lower eye pressure and protect remaining vision.

How often should I be checked if glaucoma runs in my family?

People with a family history should have regular eye examinations — your specialist will advise the right interval.
