Toric IOLs: Correcting Astigmatism During Cataract Surgery

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

Cataract surgery is a chance not just to remove a cloudy lens, but to improve your vision in other ways. For people with significant astigmatism, a toric intraocular lens (IOL) corrects the astigmatism at the same time — often reducing dependence on glasses for distance.

What a toric IOL does

A standard (monofocal) lens gives clear distance vision but doesn’t correct astigmatism, so glasses may still be needed. A toric IOL is built with the astigmatism correction in the lens itself and is aligned precisely in the eye to neutralise it.

Who benefits

People with meaningful corneal astigmatism who want sharper, more glasses-independent distance vision after cataract surgery. Precise corneal measurements determine the exact lens and alignment.

What to expect

The surgery itself is the same gentle phaco procedure; the difference is the lens chosen and the careful alignment. Realistic expectations — and good measurements — give the best results.

Frequently asked questions

Will a toric IOL mean I never need glasses?

It reduces dependence on glasses for distance by correcting astigmatism, but you may still need reading glasses unless you choose a presbyopia-correcting option.

Is a toric lens worth it?

For eyes with significant astigmatism, it can give noticeably sharper distance vision than a standard lens. Whether it suits you is decided after measurements.
