Phacoemulsification: Modern Cataract Surgery Explained
“Phaco” — phacoemulsification — is the modern, gold-standard technique for cataract surgery. It replaced older large-incision methods and is why cataract surgery today is a quick, comfortable, day procedure.
How phacoemulsification works
Through a tiny incision (often around 2–3 mm and usually stitch-free), an ultrasonic probe gently breaks up the cloudy lens and removes it. A clear, folded intraocular lens (IOL) is then inserted through the same small opening, where it unfolds into place.

Frequently asked questions
Is phacoemulsification the same as laser cataract surgery?
Phaco uses ultrasound to remove the lens. Some steps can be assisted by a femtosecond laser, but the lens is still removed by phaco. Both are modern, effective approaches.
How long does phaco cataract surgery take?
The procedure itself usually takes around 15–30 minutes per eye, and you go home the same day.
