Retinal Detachment: Warning Signs Not to Miss

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

Retinal detachment — where the light-sensitive retina lifts away from the back of the eye — is a sight-threatening emergency. The reassuring part: it usually announces itself with warning signs, and prompt treatment can save vision.

The classic warning signs

  • A sudden shower of new floaters
  • Flashes of light, often at the edge of vision
  • A dark shadow or curtain moving across your field of view
  • A sudden drop in vision

These are not to be “watched” — they need same-day assessment.

Who is at higher risk

People who are highly short-sighted, have had eye surgery or injury, or have a family history are at greater risk. A posterior vitreous detachment (common with age) can sometimes trigger a tear.

Why fast action matters

A retinal tear caught early can often be sealed with laser; an established detachment usually needs surgery. The sooner it is treated, the better the chance of preserving vision.

Frequently asked questions

Is retinal detachment painful?

Usually not — it is typically painless, which is why the visual warning signs are so important to act on.

Can retinal detachment be fixed?

Yes — with timely surgery or laser. Outcomes are best when treatment is prompt, before the central vision is affected.
