Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD): What to Know

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the macula — the small central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. It is a leading cause of central vision loss in later life, and early detection can make a real difference.

Dry vs wet AMD

  • Dry AMD is the common, slowly progressive form, with gradual central blurring.
  • Wet AMD is less common but more aggressive, with abnormal vessels that leak — it can cause rapid central distortion and needs prompt treatment.

Warning signs

Watch for blurred or distorted central vision, straight lines that look wavy, or a dim/blank patch in the centre. A simple home grid (Amsler grid) can help you notice changes.

Why early detection matters

Wet AMD treated early with injections can often preserve vision. Even in dry AMD, monitoring, lifestyle measures and not smoking help protect sight.

Frequently asked questions

Is AMD treatable?

Wet AMD is treatable with injections, especially when started early. Dry AMD is managed with monitoring and risk-reduction measures.

Does AMD lead to total blindness?

AMD affects central vision but usually spares side vision, so it rarely causes total blindness — though central tasks like reading can be affected.
