Lazy Eye (Amblyopia): Why Early Treatment Wins
“Lazy eye” — amblyopia — is reduced vision in an eye that is otherwise healthy, because the brain learned to favour the other eye during early childhood. It is the most common cause of childhood vision impairment, and the earlier it is treated, the better the result.
How amblyopia develops
If one eye sends a blurred or misaligned image early in life — because of a squint, a large difference in prescription, or an obstruction — the developing brain suppresses it. Without correction, that eye’s vision stays weak.
Why early treatment matters
The visual system is most adaptable in the first years of life. Treatment in early childhood can recover good vision; left too late, the loss may become permanent.
How it’s treated
Treatment addresses the cause — glasses for refractive error, treating a squint — and then encourages the weaker eye to work, often with patching or drops for a set time each day.
Frequently asked questions
Can a lazy eye be treated in adults?
Treatment is far more effective in childhood. Some improvement may be possible later, but early intervention gives the best outcome.
How is amblyopia detected if my child seems fine?
Through a proper eye check — children rarely notice one weak eye, so screening is key.
