Eye Pressure (IOP): What’s Normal and Why It Matters

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

Intraocular pressure (IOP) — the pressure inside the eye — is one of the key measurements in eye care, because raised pressure is the main treatable risk factor for glaucoma. But the numbers need careful interpretation.

What is a “normal” eye pressure?

Most people’s pressure sits within a typical range, but “normal” varies between individuals. Some develop glaucoma at pressures considered normal, while others tolerate higher pressures without damage — so the figure is read alongside the optic nerve and visual field.

Why pressure varies

IOP changes through the day and can be affected by corneal thickness, which is why accurate measurement and repeat checks matter.

The bigger picture

Lowering eye pressure is how glaucoma is treated — but the diagnosis rests on the whole picture: pressure, the optic nerve’s appearance, and the field of vision together.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have glaucoma with normal eye pressure?

Yes — “normal-tension” glaucoma exists, which is why the optic nerve and visual field are examined, not just the pressure.

How is eye pressure measured?

With a tonometer; gentle, quick methods (including drop-free rebound tonometry) are available, especially useful in screening and for children.
