Living with Keratoconus: Daily Life and Long-Term Care
Being diagnosed with keratoconus can feel daunting, but for most people it is a very manageable condition. With the right care, the great majority continue to drive, work and live normally — here is what daily life and long-term management look like.
Stabilise first
If keratoconus is progressing, corneal cross-linking halts it. Stabilising the cornea early is the foundation that makes everything else easier.
Clear vision day to day
Many people see well with glasses in mild cases, and with specialised rigid or scleral contact lenses in more advanced ones. Modern lenses are comfortable and give sharp vision over an irregular cornea.
Practical tips
- Avoid eye rubbing — a known driver of progression
- Manage allergies that make you rub
- Keep regular reviews so any change is caught early
- Have corneal scans before any laser vision surgery (LASIK is unsafe in keratoconus)
When more is needed
Even advanced keratoconus has good options, including intracorneal rings and, when necessary, a corneal transplant (often DALK) with excellent outcomes.

Will keratoconus keep getting worse?
