Why Corneal Screening Before LASIK Matters
The single most important factor in a safe LASIK result is not the laser itself — it is the screening that happens beforehand. Detailed corneal assessment is what separates a good outcome from a risky one.
What screening looks for
- Corneal thickness and shape — enough healthy tissue to treat safely
- Signs of keratoconus or other thinning disorders, which make LASIK unsafe
- Surface health (dry eye) and a stable prescription
Why keratoconus is the key concern
LASIK removes corneal tissue. In an eye with undetected keratoconus, that can weaken an already fragile cornea and worsen vision. Modern corneal tomography (such as ANTERION imaging) detects subtle, early signs before any surgery.
When LASIK isn’t the answer
If screening shows a thin or irregular cornea, safer alternatives — PRK, or lens-based options — may be recommended. Saying “not yet” or “not this procedure” is itself a mark of good care.
Frequently asked questions
Can everyone have LASIK?
No — suitability depends on your cornea, prescription stability and eye health. Thorough screening confirms whether LASIK is safe for you.
What test rules out keratoconus before LASIK?
Corneal tomography maps the cornea’s shape and thickness to detect early keratoconus that a routine test would miss.
