Glaucoma Treatment: Drops, Laser and Surgery

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

Glaucoma treatment has one core aim: to lower the pressure inside the eye and protect the optic nerve from further damage. There are several effective ways to do this, often used in steps.

Eye drops

For most people, daily pressure-lowering drops are the first treatment. Used consistently, they are highly effective — so remembering them every day really matters.

Laser

Laser treatment (such as SLT) can lower pressure by improving the eye’s natural drainage. It is quick, repeatable, and sometimes used as a first option or alongside drops.

Surgery

When drops and laser are not enough, surgery creates a new drainage route or uses a tiny device to control pressure. Modern minimally invasive options have widened the choices.

Choosing the right plan

The best approach depends on your glaucoma type, pressure, nerve damage and how you respond. Treatment protects the sight you have — it cannot restore what is already lost, which is why early, steady management is so important.

Frequently asked questions

Will I need glaucoma drops for life?

Often yes, to keep pressure controlled — though laser or surgery may reduce or replace them in some cases.

Does glaucoma surgery restore lost vision?

No — treatment protects remaining vision by lowering pressure; it cannot recover sight already lost, so early treatment is key.
