Diabetes and Your Eyes: Protecting Sight Beyond the Retina

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

Most people know diabetes can damage the retina. Fewer realise it also raises the risk of cataract, glaucoma and dry eye. The good news: regular eye checks and steady blood-sugar control protect against all of these.

The retina — the main concern

High sugar damages the tiny retinal blood vessels (diabetic retinopathy), often silently at first. A dilated retina check catches it early, before sight is threatened.

Beyond the retina

  • Cataract tends to develop earlier in people with diabetes
  • Glaucoma risk is higher
  • Dry eye and fluctuating vision with sugar swings are common

What protects your sight

Good control of blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol, not smoking, and a yearly dilated eye examination together make the biggest difference. Many problems are highly treatable when found early.

Frequently asked questions

How often should a person with diabetes have an eye check?

At least once a year, or more often if changes are found. Don’t wait for symptoms — early diabetic eye disease has none.

Can good sugar control reverse eye damage?

It can slow or stabilise damage and is vital, though established changes may still need treatment. Prevention and early detection are key.
