Eye Donation: Giving the Gift of Sight in India

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

Corneal blindness affects a large number of people in India — and unlike many causes of blindness, it is often curable through a corneal transplant. That cure depends entirely on the generosity of eye donation.

What can be donated

After death, the corneas can be donated to give sight to others. Eye donation does not disfigure and does not delay funeral arrangements; it is a simple, dignified act.

Who can donate

People of almost any age can pledge their eyes — spectacle wearers and those who have had cataract surgery usually still can. A few medical conditions are exceptions, assessed by the eye bank.

How donation helps

Donated corneas, screened and prepared by recognised eye banks, are transplanted to restore vision for people with scarring, keratoconus or other corneal disease. One donor can help more than one recipient.

Frequently asked questions

Does eye donation affect the appearance of the donor?

No — the procedure is gentle and does not alter appearance, and arrangements are not delayed.

Can someone who wore glasses donate their eyes?

Yes — wearing glasses or having had cataract surgery usually does not prevent corneal donation.
