Cataract Surgery Recovery: Do’s and Don’ts

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

Cataract surgery recovery is usually quick and comfortable, and most people are back to normal life within days. A few sensible precautions help your eye heal cleanly and your vision settle.

The first days

Mild grittiness, watering or a little blur is normal. You will use antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops and wear a shield at night. Vision often improves within a day or two and continues to sharpen over a few weeks.

Do’s

  • Use your drops exactly as prescribed
  • Wear sunglasses outdoors and the shield at night
  • Rest your eyes and attend follow-ups

Don’ts

  • Don’t rub or press the eye
  • Don’t splash water directly into it or swim until cleared
  • Avoid heavy lifting, dusty environments and eye make-up for a short while

When to seek help

Increasing pain, marked redness, sudden vision loss or a lot of new floaters should be checked promptly.

Frequently asked questions

How soon can I watch TV or use my phone after cataract surgery?

Usually the same day, in moderation — screens don’t harm the eye. Just rest if it feels tired.

When will my vision be fully clear?

Many people see well within days; vision can keep refining over a few weeks as the eye settles and new glasses are prescribed if needed.
