Scleral & RGP Contact Lenses for Keratoconus

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

As keratoconus makes the cornea more irregular, glasses and ordinary soft lenses struggle to give sharp vision. Specially fitted rigid and scleral contact lenses can restore clarity by creating a smooth new optical surface over the cone.

Rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses

These firm lenses sit on the cornea and mask its irregularity, often giving much crisper vision than glasses in moderate keratoconus.

Scleral lenses

Larger lenses that vault right over the cornea and rest on the white of the eye (the sclera), with a fluid reservoir beneath. They are often more comfortable and stable in advanced or sensitive eyes.

Where lenses fit in the bigger picture

Lenses correct vision but do not stop keratoconus progressing — that is the role of cross-linking. Many patients use both: cross-linking to stabilise the cornea, and lenses for clear day-to-day vision.

Frequently asked questions

Are scleral lenses comfortable?

Most people adapt well; the fluid layer under the lens can make them surprisingly comfortable, even in sensitive eyes.

Do contact lenses cure keratoconus?

No — they give clear vision but do not halt progression. Cross-linking is used to stabilise the cornea.
