LASIK vs SMILE vs PRK: Which Laser Procedure Suits You?

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

Laser vision correction is not one operation but a family of techniques. LASIK, SMILE and PRK all reshape the cornea to reduce dependence on glasses — but they differ in how they do it and who they suit.

LASIK

A thin flap is created and the laser reshapes the cornea beneath it. Recovery is fast and comfortable, which makes LASIK the most widely chosen technique for suitable eyes.

SMILE

A flapless, keyhole technique: a small lenticule of tissue is removed through a tiny incision. It appeals to those who prefer a minimal-incision approach and is well suited to certain prescriptions.

PRK

The oldest, surface-based method — no flap is made. Recovery takes a little longer and is more uncomfortable early on, but PRK can be the safer choice for thinner corneas or particular lifestyles.

How the right one is chosen

The decision rests on your corneal thickness and shape, your prescription, your eyes’ surface health and how you use your vision. Detailed scans guide a safe, individual recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

Is SMILE better than LASIK?

Neither is universally “better” — each suits different eyes. SMILE is flapless; LASIK recovers very quickly. Your scans decide.

Who is PRK best for?

PRK can suit thinner corneas or people in contact-sport or high-impact roles where a flap is less ideal.
