Cataract vs Glaucoma: What’s the Difference?
Cataract and glaucoma are two of the most common eye conditions — and they are frequently confused. They affect different parts of the eye, behave differently, and are managed in very different ways. Here is how to tell them apart.
Cataract: a clouding lens
A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, causing gradually blurred, dull or glary vision. It is reversible — surgery replaces the cloudy lens with a clear one and restores sight.
Glaucoma: a damaged nerve
Glaucoma is damage to the optic nerve, usually linked to eye pressure, that quietly erodes side vision. Unlike cataract, the damage is not reversible — treatment protects remaining vision but cannot restore what’s lost.
Key differences at a glance
- Cataract — lens; gradual blur; reversible with surgery
- Glaucoma — optic nerve; silent loss of side vision; controllable, not reversible
Both become more common with age, and a single person can have both — which is why a comprehensive check examines the lens, the pressure and the nerve.
Frequently asked questions
Can you have cataract and glaucoma together?
Yes — both are common with age, and they can coexist. A full eye exam assesses for both.
Which is more serious, cataract or glaucoma?
Cataract is reversible with surgery; glaucoma’s damage is permanent, so undetected glaucoma is the greater long-term threat — hence the value of early checks.
