How Often Should You Get Your Eyes Checked?
Many sight-threatening conditions develop silently, with no early symptoms. That is why having your eyes checked on a sensible schedule — even when your vision feels perfect — is one of the simplest ways to protect your sight for life.
A general guide
- Children: a check in the preschool years and as advised, since early problems shape vision development
- Adults: roughly every one to two years
- Over 40: more regular checks, as glaucoma, cataract and presbyopia become more common
Check more often if you
- Have diabetes (at least yearly retina checks)
- Have a family history of glaucoma or other eye disease
- Are highly short-sighted, or have an existing eye condition
- Notice any change in vision — don’t wait for a routine date
Why it’s worth it
Glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and early cataract are all far easier to manage when caught early. A check-up is a small investment for the sight you rely on every day.
Frequently asked questions
I have perfect vision — do I still need eye checks?
Yes. A check examines eye health, not just your prescription, and catches silent conditions before they affect vision.
How often should someone with diabetes have an eye check?
At least once a year for a dilated retina examination, or more often if changes are found.
