Protecting Your Eyes from UV and Sun

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

We protect our skin from the sun, but often forget our eyes. Ultraviolet (UV) light can damage the eyes both immediately and over many years, contributing to several conditions — and protection is simple.

How UV affects the eyes

  • Long-term UV exposure is linked to cataract and possibly macular degeneration
  • It contributes to surface growths such as pterygium
  • Intense short-term exposure (e.g. snow or welding glare) can cause painful “sunburn” of the cornea

How to protect your eyes

  • Wear sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB (UV400)
  • Add a wide-brimmed hat for extra shade
  • Protect children’s eyes too — their lenses let through more UV
  • Never look directly at the sun, including during an eclipse

Frequently asked questions

Do darker sunglasses give more UV protection?

Not necessarily — protection depends on the UV filter, not the tint. Choose lenses labelled 100% UV or UV400, whatever their shade.

Do I need sunglasses on cloudy days?

UV passes through cloud, so meaningful exposure still occurs. Protection on bright, hazy and reflective (water, snow) days is most important.
