Astigmatism Explained — and How It’s Corrected
Astigmatism is one of the most common — and most misunderstood — vision problems. It simply means the cornea (or lens) is curved more in one direction than another, like a rugby ball rather than a football, so light focuses unevenly and vision blurs at all distances.
Signs of astigmatism
- Blurred or distorted vision near and far
- Eye strain and headaches
- Difficulty with night driving and glare
How it’s corrected
Astigmatism is very correctable:
- Glasses and toric contact lenses for everyday correction
- Laser vision correction (LASIK, SMILE, PRK) to reshape the cornea for suitable eyes
- Toric intraocular lenses during cataract surgery, correcting astigmatism at the same time
Why a proper assessment helps
Precise corneal measurements determine the best option for your eyes and lifestyle. Irregular astigmatism (as in keratoconus) needs specialist assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Is astigmatism serious?
Regular astigmatism is common and easily corrected. Rapidly increasing or irregular astigmatism should be assessed, as it can indicate keratoconus.
Can astigmatism be cured permanently?
Laser correction or a toric lens during cataract surgery can give a lasting solution for suitable eyes; glasses and lenses correct it day to day.
