Eye Emergencies: What to Do Before You Reach Hospital

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

Most eye problems are not emergencies — but a few are, and acting quickly (and correctly) can save sight. Knowing the right first steps for the common eye emergencies is worth a few minutes of your time.

Chemical splash

This is the one true “do it now” emergency: rinse the eye immediately with clean water or saline for at least 15–20 minutes, then seek urgent care. Don’t wait to travel first.

Sudden vision loss

Painless, sudden loss of vision in one eye — or a shadow or curtain across it — needs same-day assessment, as it can signal a retinal or vascular problem.

Eye injury or foreign body

For a blunt or sharp injury, protect the eye (a shield, not pressure), do not rub it, and don’t try to remove anything embedded. Seek care promptly.

Severe pain, redness with reduced vision

A very painful, red eye with blurred vision — especially in a contact-lens wearer — should be seen urgently; it can indicate infection or acute glaucoma.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do first for a chemical in the eye?

Rinse immediately and copiously with clean water for 15–20 minutes, then get urgent care — rinsing first is more important than rushing to travel.

Should I rub my eye if something gets in it?

No — rubbing can cause more damage. Blink, rinse gently, and seek help if it does not clear or if there is pain or reduced vision.
