Flashes and Floaters: When to Worry

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

Tiny specks or cobwebs drifting across your vision — floaters — are extremely common and usually harmless. But a sudden change can occasionally signal a problem at the retina that needs prompt attention.

What floaters are

Floaters are shadows cast by clumps in the eye’s jelly (the vitreous). As we age the vitreous shrinks and pulls away from the retina — a normal process that often causes new floaters and is usually benign.

The warning signs

Seek an urgent eye check if you notice:

  • A sudden shower of new floaters
  • Flashes of light, especially in the side vision
  • A shadow or curtain spreading across your vision

These can indicate a retinal tear or detachment, where fast treatment can save sight.

What to do

Don’t wait it out. A dilated retinal examination quickly distinguishes harmless floaters from a tear that needs treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Are floaters dangerous?

Usually not — but a sudden increase with flashes or a shadow needs same-day assessment to rule out a retinal tear.

Do floaters go away?

Many become less noticeable over time as the brain adapts. Persistent or sudden ones should be checked first.
