LASIK Safety: Myths vs Facts

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

LASIK is one of the most studied elective procedures in medicine, yet myths persist. Here is a clear-eyed look at what the evidence actually says — and where the real safeguards lie.

Myth: “LASIK wears off after a few years.”

For a stable prescription, LASIK results are generally long-lasting. Vision can still change later in life from natural ageing (such as presbyopia or cataract), but that is not LASIK “wearing off”.

Myth: “LASIK causes blindness.”

Serious sight-threatening complications are very rare. Most side effects, such as temporary dryness or night glare, are minor and settle.

Fact: screening is the real safeguard

The most important safety step happens before the laser — detailed corneal mapping to confirm your cornea is thick, regular and healthy, and to rule out conditions like keratoconus. Good candidate selection is what makes LASIK safe.

Who should think twice

People with thin or irregular corneas, unstable prescriptions, certain eye-surface conditions or specific medical issues may be better suited to alternatives such as PRK or lens-based options.

Frequently asked questions

Is LASIK safe in the long term?

For well-screened, suitable eyes it has a strong long-term safety record. Thorough pre-surgery assessment is the key to a safe outcome.

Will I get dry eyes or night glare?

Some temporary dryness or glare is common early on and usually improves over weeks to months.
