Recovery After a Corneal Transplant: A Week-by-Week Guide

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

Healing after a corneal transplant is a gradual journey, not an overnight switch. Knowing what is normal — and what is not — helps you protect your new graft and get the best result.

The first days

Some discomfort, watering, redness and light sensitivity are normal early on. You will use anti-rejection and antibiotic drops, wear a protective shield at night, and avoid rubbing or pressing the eye.

The first weeks

Vision is usually blurry at first and clears slowly. Partial-thickness grafts (DALK, DMEK/DSEK) often recover faster than full-thickness transplants. Stitches, if used, may stay for months and are removed gradually.

Do’s and don’ts

  • Do use every drop exactly as prescribed and attend all follow-ups
  • Do protect the eye from knocks, dust and water
  • Don’t rub the eye, swim, or do heavy lifting until cleared

When to call urgently

Increasing pain, redness, light sensitivity or a sudden drop in vision can signal rejection or infection — seek care the same day.

Frequently asked questions

How long until I see clearly after a corneal transplant?

Useful vision often returns over several weeks to a few months, sometimes longer for full-thickness grafts. Glasses or lenses are usually fitted once healing settles.

How long do I need the eye drops?

Anti-rejection drops are often continued for many months, sometimes longer, to protect the graft. Never stop them without advice.
