Premium IOL Options: Monofocal vs Multifocal vs Toric

Medically reviewed by Dr. Jayadatt D. Patel — MBBS, MS (Ophthalmology), FCRS · Last reviewed June 2026

During cataract surgery your natural lens is replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL). Today’s IOLs can do far more than restore basic clarity — but each type involves trade-offs worth understanding before you decide.

Monofocal IOLs

The most widely used lens. It gives crisp vision at a single distance — usually far — with reading glasses for near work. Reliable, predictable, and an excellent choice for many people.

Toric IOLs

If you have significant astigmatism, a toric IOL corrects it at the same time, giving sharper distance vision without relying on glasses to fix the astigmatism.

Multifocal & EDOF IOLs

These reduce dependence on glasses across near, intermediate and far distances. They suit motivated patients but can involve some glare or halos at night, which is why honest, individual counselling matters.

How to choose

The right IOL depends on your eyes, your astigmatism, your daily activities and your expectations — not on price alone. Precise measurements and a frank discussion lead to the best fit.

Frequently asked questions

Will a premium lens mean no glasses at all?

Premium lenses reduce dependence on glasses, but no lens guarantees complete freedom from them. Realistic expectations are part of choosing well.

Are multifocal lenses suitable for everyone?

No — they suit selected eyes and lifestyles. Some people are better served by monofocal or toric lenses.
