Keratoconus: Early Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
Keratoconus often begins quietly in the teens or twenties, as the cornea gradually thins and bulges into an irregular cone. Caught early, its progression can usually be halted — which is why recognising the first signs matters so much.
Early warning signs
- Vision that blurs or distorts and is not fully corrected by glasses
- Frequent changes in your spectacle prescription
- Increasing short-sightedness and irregular astigmatism
- Glare, halos and sensitivity to light, especially at night
- A habit of rubbing the eyes (a known risk factor)
Why early detection changes everything
Early keratoconus can be stabilised with corneal cross-linking before vision is significantly affected — often avoiding the need for a transplant later. Detection relies on detailed corneal mapping rather than a routine eye test alone.
Who should be checked
Teenagers and young adults with changing prescriptions, anyone with a family history, and those being assessed for laser vision correction should have corneal imaging.
